This biography retraces the life and career of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a multi-instrumentalist of genius who overcame his limitations and his condition as a blind man to develop a personal and original language that embraces the entire history of jazz, from New Orleans to the avant-garde to Be-bop, in other words the great "Black Classical Music". Kirk was also a key player in the civil rights movement of the '60s, setting up the Jazz and People's Movement, which included Elvin Jones, Archie Shepp, Lee Morgan, Andrew Cyrille and many others. John Kruth has rediscovered Kirk's "audio-biography", and collected a wealth of hilarious testimonials and anecdotes from his friends and family, as well as famous contemporaries whose paths he crossed, including Quincy Jones, Allen Ginsberg, Yusef Lateef, Ken Kesey and Ian Anderson of the famous British progressive rock band Jethro Tull. These first-hand accounts shed unprecedented light on the tumultuous life of this underestimated genius, right up to his untimely death due to a hectic lifestyle and excessive eating that revealed too great a lust for life.
