For more than forty years, Magma has been traversing the French musical landscape outside the realms of fashion and trends. But Magma is first and foremost the work of Christian Vander, the charismatic leader, founder, composer, drummer and occasional singer who proposes a cross between choral singing, avant-garde, rock and jazz, with lyrics sung in an imaginary language with Germanic overtones, Kobaïen. Having immersed himself in jazz since childhood, Christian Vander has always strived to offer a broad spectrum of music, dominated by the spirit of John Coltrane, but where the shadows of Cari Orff and Stravinsky also hover. Christian Vander welcomed to Magma a number of musicians who would go on to make the history of French jazz and rock, including Jannick Top, Bernard Paganotti, Claude Engel, Didier Lockwood, François Cahen, Teddy Lasry... Over the course of his career, he has also proposed other musical adventures in a different format, such as Offering, a group devoted mainly to working with vocals and percussion, and the Alien Quartet. In this long interview with Christophe Rossi, Christian Vander reveals as much about the history of Magma and his fascination with John Coltrane as he does about his spiritual quest.
