R'n'B emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, adopting elements of Pop and Hip-Hop music. Artists such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and R. Kelly dominated this period with catchy songs and elaborate choreography. Modern R&B later emerged in the 2000s, with artists such as Beyoncé, Usher, Rihanna and Chris Brown...
R'n'B is the classic example of a musical genre that has evolved over time, giving rise to different periods and sub-genres. Its origins go back a long way: the term "Rhythm and Blues" (which later evolved into R&B) first appeared in the 1940s. Originally, the term was used to describe a wide range of Afro-American music styles including Blues, Jazz, Gospel and Doo-wop. Today, R'n'B as we understand it is completely dissociated from this definition.
