Techno is a sub-genre of electronic music that emerged in Detroit in the 1980s, where artists such as Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson played a major role in its development. These pioneers were influenced by European electronic music, Funk and post-punk, and created a unique sound that would become the basis of Techno.
Over the years, Techno has spread around the world, giving rise to numerous sub-genres and derivative styles, such as Minimal Techno, Acid Techno, Industrial Techno and more. Its emblematic artists include Jeff Mills, Carl Cox, Nina Kraviz, Adam Beyer and many others.
Techno is characterised by mechanical and repetitive rhythms, synthetic sounds and a strong emphasis on dance. Techno is often used in clubs and festivals to create an electric, hypnotic atmosphere. It is often perceived as being darker and more industrial than other sub-genres of electronic music.
