Neo-Soul is a cousin subgenre of New-School music that fuses hip-hop with traditional Soul, emerging in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Neo-Soul is characterised by smooth melodies, emotive vocals and introspective lyrics addressing themes such as love, identity and social issues. Productions are often refined, incorporating contemporary elements of Jazz, R&B and Funk.
After beeing a member of hip-hop group The Fugees, Lauryn Hill launched her solo career with the critically acclaimed 1998 album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". The album skilfully blended elements of Hip-hop, R&B and Soul, and won five Grammy Awards. The voices of Erykah Badu, D'Angelo and Maxwell are also considered icons of the genre... not forgetting the hits of Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton !
