The raw, untamed energy of this musical movement born in the 1960s, was named after the garages and cellars where bands in which bands formed and rehearsed. Like its predecessor Rock'n'Roll, the Garage Rock genre embodies the spontaneity and rebellious attitude of youth: it marked the sixties with its catchy riffs and energetic performances. Iconic labels such as Norton Records, Crypt Records and Sundazed Music supported garage rock artists, helping to spread this raw, wild sound.
Bands such as The Sonics, The Kingsmen and The Seeds launched the genre with their saturated guitar sounds and frenetic rhythms. The Stooges, with their provocative attitude and chaotic stage performances, foreshadowed the Punk spirit to come. Over the years, artists such as The Cramps, Thee Oh Sees and The Black Lips have perpetuated the spirit of garage-rock with their captivating music and fiery performances. Iconic duo The White Stripes have modernised the genre by blending it with blues and rock influences. The Hives, The Strokes and The Black Keys have also played their part in revitalising the garage-rock sound for new generations. Garage-rock continues to influence the music scene with bands like Ty Segall, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Oh Sees carrying on the genre's raw energy and passion.
