Ambient is a sub-genre of electronic music characterised by its experimental nature and calm, peaceful atmospheres. It emerged in the 1970s and is often associated with composer Brian Eno, who popularised the term "ambient" to describe his music.
Ambient's original aim was to create an immersive, relaxing soundscape, inviting the listeners to immerse themselves in a state of relaxation and meditation. Unlike other sub-genres of electronic music, which emphasise percussive rhythms and melodies, Ambient focuses instead on sonic textures, synthesiser layers, drones and evolving soundscapes.
Over the years, however, Ambient has evolved and diversified, incorporating influences from other musical genres such as electronica, jazz, post-rock and even contemporary classical. Some iconic Ambient artists include Harold Budd, Aphex Twin (in some of his work), Stars of the Lid, and many others.
The compositions are often characterised by their harmonic simplicity, using slow chords or repetitive patterns to create a sense of tranquillity. Transitions between musical elements are generally smooth and gradual, contributing to the relaxing effect of the music.
