In music, computer technology plays a central role in contemporary creation. The use of computers in composition takes many forms, reflecting the diversity of aesthetic approaches. After two generations of computer technology, which saw the succession of conversational and graphical systems, what conclusions can be drawn about music creation tools from the perspective of their user interfaces? To what extent can their design and evaluation be streamlined? Should creators conform to the representations offered by the machine, or can they bend them to their will? What improvements can we expect from technological developments and research related to human-computer interfaces? These are the questions that researchers in computer music, interface specialists, software designers, composers, and musicologists were invited to answer at a symposium organized on December 11 and 12, 1998, by Ircam and Ina-GRM, the proceedings of which are collected in this book. The first part offers several historical perspectives on the relationship between numbers, technology, and music, culminating in a presentation of the latest computer-based composition environments. The next two parts are devoted to graphical and gestural interfaces, respectively. The fourth part brings together testimonials from composers on their relationship with technology. The last part transcribes the round table discussion that closed the symposium.
